On Friday we went out to visit MAKD and New Hope Primary schools. We gave a short sermon on Mark and got to meet some of the children, all beaming in their school sweaters. Given that we prepared to tell fairytales to the kids, the sermons were indeed short but covered how Jesus was “a promoter of vocational education.” Father Christopher announced how we were studying vocational skills at Sewanee. We thought not to explain the vocational reliability of Philosophy and Biology majors at the time.
The kids patiently waited until a pavlov-esque “The Saints Come Marching In” blared over the speakers to cue a disciplined precession into the classrooms. After the sermon, there were plenty of pictures with the teachers, a custom that we are just getting used to. We spoke with the Principal over Chapati and Tea about the school. Then began the tour to the classrooms asking who remembered our names: “Pita….Baah!” and “Madame Sprowsse….Taylah!”

Following MAKD, we made a surprise drop-in visit to another one of Father Christopher’s schools, New Hope Primary. His daughter was actually the principal here and we luckily caught her mid-assembly to say hello to the children. All nearby heads in Katooke turned towards the strange sound of young Mzungu’s on the microphone telling the students to be good.

A quick dash across the street brought another visit to Richie Primary School. We did not get the chance to talk to any kids here but made sure to wave to some of the classrooms. Lots of little smiles and waves and high pitched “Bye Mzungu’s!” Check out some of the pictures we took at MAKD, the school uniforms in Uganda cannot be beat.
